Swiss delight as Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka sweep into French Open third round

Swiss pair Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka made light work of their opponents to reach the third round of the French Open on Wednesday.

Playing for the first time at Roland Garros since 2015, Federer didn’t really have to get out of first gear against lucky loser Oscar Otte as he secured a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 37 minutes.

One break of serve in each of the three sets were enough to earn the 2009 champion the victory over the German, but the 37-year-old did show that he still has some wheels on him as he chased down some shots.

Next up is Casper Ruud after the Norwegian upset 26th seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

The 24th seeded Wawrinka had an even easier day at the office as he dropped only five games en route to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 victory against Christian Garin from Chile.

Wawrinka will face either Marin Cilic or Grigor Dimitrov in the third round while Stefanos Tsitsipas could be a fourth-round opponent.

Seventh seed Kei Nishikori had more of a battle on his hands as he came from a set down to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in over three hours.

Also through are Nicolas Mahut, who beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, and Juan Ignacio Londero, who secured a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Richard Gasquet.
